Hey Fanatics, what are YOU listening to?

While we all have a place in our hearts (of various shapes, sizes and hue) for Henry I'd love to hear what else you are into. I listen to Henry's radio show every week and while I'm not into everything he plays I keep an open mind and an open wikipidia to look up what strokes his eclectic auditory pleasure center.

I sometimes do my own small version of the Fanatic! books on my Live Journal (nofunliz.livejournal.com - you're all welcome to read about my boring life and very fucked perspectives) based on the stuff on my iPod and sometimes I'm listening to stuff I KNOW sucks donkey testicles but I bought it and socked it on the iPod for a reason...so there's got to be a redeeming quality in there somewhere.

Also, I've just started using Pandora (Pandora.com) to find good (to me) new music or shit I've missed because I've been living under a rock or something. There is so much and hardly any of it gets on the radio. I have to say, Pandora has turned me on to some pretty AMAZING stuff that just really needs to be heard.

So, in my normal long winded fashion, what I'm asking for is just a continuous update...what did you all hear today that tickled your fancy? What are you listening to RIGHT NOW as you read and post here? What is your favorite band/song/artist right now? This could change from day to day or hour to hour so is a pretty neat way to keep a forum thread moving.

There's no shame to any kind of music. You like what you like and fuck anyone who wants to tell you what you should or shouldn't be listening to. If you like Wham! or Air Supply or Miles Davis or Frank Sinatra or Willie Nelson you rock on, tell me (us) about it and why.

For me, I've been a fan of the Indigo Girls since I was about 12 and sexuality wasn't something I was thinking about when I heard those first ringing resounding chords from them. I plugged them into Pandora today as a genre example and got my mind blown by some artists I had never heard of. If you like folksy rock, rock rock and female singer-songwriter stuff you need to check out some stuff from Brandi Carslile and Antje Duvekot.

Current listening:
Turpentine - Brandi Carlile

I love everything from Beethoven to Razor (Canadian thrash metal that my husband got me into), and everything in between. Lately, I've been listening to the new Disturbed album, because I believe they are the best of the newer bands out there.

God...It's been a while since I've thought about what I listen to.

First and foremost, I'm a jazz lover. Started when I was 11 and being baby-sat by my mom's boyfriend whilst she was in the hospital. All he ever listened to was his jazz records when he was at home. He made me watch 'Ken Burns Jazz', and ended up buying me the five disc set that features most of the music played in the documentary.

That was when I actually started consciously caring about music.

Now-a-days my iPod is a plethora of music-stuffs. Hardcore, pop-punk, opera, and Japanese screamo: it's all there. If I hear a snippet of something I kinda like, I buy the album and slap it on there. I'm never dissatisfied with what comes up when my iPod or iTunes is on shuffle.

Currently though, I'm addicted to 'Dashboard' by Modest Mouse, as well as Midicronica; a strange Japanese techno/R&B group. Some of their music is featured in the anime 'Samurai Champloo'.

The 'Most Played Songs' on my iTunes:

Dashboard - Modest Mouse
San Francisco - Midicronica
Broken Youth - Nico Touches The Walls
After Tonight - Justin Nozuka
Illumination - Rollins Band

And, I've just tried Pandora.com and I must say THANK YOU INDI!

I absolutely love that they turn off the stuff you don't like as soon as you click the 'thumbs down'. (I thought I was going to be condemned to three minutes of Amy Winehouse D:)

When I hear Illumination, I think of the video every time. Excellent video, and Henry looked damn good!

The album I have been listening to most consistantly recently is "Death Magnetic" by Metallica.

The Pixies were the best band that ever was.

Currently in rotation:

Tegan and Sara - The Con /and/ So Jealous
Gun Club - Miami
Love - Forever Changes
The La's - The La's
Various - Go Right: Jazz from Poland 1963-75
Rollins Band - Get Some -> Go Again
David Bowie - Bowie at the Beeb
Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Bob Dylan - oh, no wait, wrong list. Dylan goes on my "music gods I'm seeing in concert tomorrow" list

And will be adding Miriam Makeba back into the list soon, if I can find where I stashed her albums. I decided not to alphabetize my collection when I moved. It suddenly seems like a very bad idea. Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to go out and buy her on vinyl again.

Hey kids, Rollins fans and in particular, jazz lovers!

We're in the middle of the 10 day long Rochester International Jazz Festival here and since this past Friday I've seen some damn amazing artists who I think everyone should absolutely check out.

Organissimo - soul, funk, gospel, rock and latin blend like buttah' with this trio from Michigan.

Bill Frisell Trio - very out there, very free form and your mind wanders away until you realize, 15 minutes later that this is his rendition of "Shenandoah", holy crap!

Liane Carrol - The UK lends us some amazongly sexy powerful vocals and a thrill ride on the piano. Winner of funkiest rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" I've ever heard. I tried to pick up her CDs at the show, but they sold out before I could get up there. Yes, she's that damn good.

Jon Cleary - Englishman gone Big Easy! Monster piano player, everyone at this venue was stomping and cheering and dancing and just loving it. Snagged the CD on this one.

Jonas Kullhammar Quartet - Straight out of Sweden, tenor sax be-bop flowing into free-form avant wildness and back again. I was VERY impressed, also snagged a CD from this one.

Tonight we're hoping to catch Maria Farinha & Jongo Trio, Brazillian jazz! I'm so psyched!

Let me first reply to the poster...How incredible is Bandi Carslile? I mean...What do you say to something like that? I feel that same way about Imogen Heap, Skin of Skunk Anansie, and Devin Townsend. 2nd...How great is Pandora? Interviewed the guy behind the idea at Music Millenium in Portland, Oregon. Good kid.

I've always been a fan of forward thinking, aggressive, and technical music that have melodic characteristics and huge dynamics. I also favor a bit of avante garde electronica, noise, and jazz. If assaults on one's musical taste were measured somehow by volume, I would be the single most attacked and brow beaten musician in history. I am hated. If I had a nickel for every time I was engaged in the "technical guitar makes you a loser" debate, I would have many......many nickels.

Here's what on Ipod rotation right now.

Devin Townsend - Ki
The Ruts - Best Of.
Divine Heresy - Bringer of Plagues
Atari Teenage Riot - Burn, Berlin, Burn
Obituary - Darkest Day
Textures - Sihouettes
Hatesphere - To The Nines
Marvin Gaye - Best Of
Imogen Heap - Ellipse

Cheers.

Tim
